Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco manufactured throat dampers in several series, and the part you need depends on the stamp on the frame edge or the throat opening dimensions. The most common units in Littleton are the G-series cast-iron throat dampers (typically 8″ × 8″ up to 13″ × 13″) and the lighter L-series steel assemblies found in prefab fireplace installations.

To identify yours: look for a raised casting mark on the left frame rail, or measure the throat opening width and depth. The G-series uses a 3/8″ diameter pivot pin; the L-series uses 5/16″. That half-ounce difference matters because an L-series pin in a G-series frame will wallow out the bore in two seasons.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing

• Handle spins freely without resistance. The square drive shaft has rounded off inside the throat plate casting, or the worm gear has stripped. On Gelco units this usually means the cast iron throat plate itself is cracked at the drive bore; the handle is fine, but the plate won’t transfer motion.
• Draft smell or cold air even when “closed.” The throat plate isn’t seating squarely against the frame. In Littleton’s dry climate, the plate edge can chip or the frame rails spread slightly from thermal cycling. Smoke shelf debris can also wedge the plate open a finger’s width.
• Rattling or ticking when wind hits the chimney. The pivot pin is worn undersize or the retaining clip is missing. The whole throat plate shifts in the frame. This gets worse in spring when the Front Range wind events pick up.
• Visible rust flakes or orange staining on the firebrick. The damper frame is corroding from condensate dripping down the flue during shoulder seasons. Gelco cast iron resists this better than stamped steel, but neither lasts forever if the chimney crown lets water in.
• Plate jams halfway and won’t move in either direction. Creosote or debris has built up on the smoke shelf directly below the throat plate. On older Littleton homes with original Gelco units, we’ve found this caused by partial chimney fires that warped the plate edge without the homeowner realizing.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can verify the model stamp, measure the throat opening, and check whether the handle detaches cleanly from the drive shaft. Do that from the firebox with a flashlight - not from above.

What you should not do: climb onto the roof to access the damper from the flue top, or attempt to remove the throat plate without supporting the frame. The plate weighs 8-14 pounds of cast iron and sits above your head. If the retaining clips fail during removal, it drops. We’ve also seen homeowners force a seized plate and crack the smoke chamber sidewall, turning a $300 damper job into a $1,800 masonry repair.
