Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Is Failing

• Rust streaks down the flue tile or crown. Gelco uses 304 stainless, but the spot-welded corners and the collar seam are where moisture collects during Littleton’s spring freeze-thaw cycles. Once the passivation layer breaks down, the rust runs down and stains the masonry below. We see this most on north-facing caps that never fully dry.
• Mesh screen pulling away from the frame or developing gaps. The Front Range down-slope winds in winter hit 60+ mph regularly. Gelco’s mesh is crimped into a rolled edge, and after enough flex cycles the crimp loosens. A gap larger than a quarter lets squirrels in. We’ve pulled nests out of flues in the Kipling corridor every April.
• Water in the firebox or rust on the damper. The cap’s primary job is shedding water away from the flue opening. If the lid is dented, the collar has separated from the flue tile, or the storm collar caulk has failed, water runs straight down. In Littleton’s semi-arid climate, homeowners often miss this until the first heavy spring storm.
• Cap sitting crooked or visibly shifted after wind. Gelco caps use stainless screws into a compression band. The band loosens over years of thermal cycling, and one good wind event tilts the cap. A tilted cap creates a scoop that drives rain into the flue instead of deflecting it.
• Visible cracks or holes in the lid. Hail does this. The 2023 June hailstorm across Arapahoe County dented dozens of caps we replaced that summer. Even small lid cracks create turbulence that pulls smoke backward during low-draft conditions, especially on cold-start fires.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check from the ground or a ladder at the gutter line: whether the cap is sitting level, whether mesh gaps are visible, whether rust streaks run down the flue tile. Binoculars help. Document what you see with photos.

Here’s where DIY goes wrong. Roof work on a pitched surface above 6/12 is genuinely dangerous, and most Littleton residential roofs are 7/12 or steeper. The compression band on a Gelco cap requires even torque all around, or the cap tilts and leaks within a season. Worse, stripping the old fasteners without dropping debris down the flue takes a practiced hand. One dropped screw into a gas log set and you’re buying a new burner assembly.
